A new study found that there may be an association between Functional Dyspepsia (FD) and Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). Functional dyspepsia can be defined as non-ulcer stomach pain. Studies show increased incidence of Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) in patients with Functional Dyspepsia.
Proton Pump Inhibitors are used in FD as they impair the acid barrier of the stomach, which may increase risk of SIBO. Studies have shown from breath tests that 1/3 patients with FD may have SIBO. These findings may lead to more research in areas of FD and SIBO- but more research needs to be done to improve treatments of Functional Dyspepsia and SIBO.
