When I met Arianna Huffington in person yesterday at her book launch in Philly, you could say- I was downright giddy. There I was inches away from her as she graciously took our book and said ,“ I’ll look at it for the Post…”
I am a fan of Ms. Huffington’s for several reasons, she is an immigrant ( I relate!) and represents how when you work hard enough and are smart- you can make it in America. She was on Forbes most powerful women’s list (twice) and is Times Top 100 Most Influential People and she has had a prolific political and writing career.
For her book launch interview, Ms. Huffington was elegant under pressure and at the same time could fire it right back- without flickering an eyelash. I also admired her scientific citations and sense of humor -especially when the questions got loaded!
Her new book Thrive. The Third Metric to Redefining Success and Creating a Life of Well-Being, Wisdom and Wonder, moves away from politics to talk about the 4 pillars of success: Wellbeing, Wisdom, Wonder and Giving. In Wellbeing she delves into meditation, getting enough sleep and stress reduction. Wisdom encourages gratitude, intuition and the turning off of mobile devices by “gently walking them out of your bedroom”. Wisdom asks us to forgive ourselves and find wonder and joy through mindful moments . Finally the fourth pillar, Giving suggests gestures of kindness, personal connection and sharing your natural gifts with others.
“How Too’s” become available in the Appendices where there are 12 Tools, Apps and Resources to stay focused, another dozen to help meditate and be mindful and resources for volunteering.
Like our book Having Your All, How Self-Care Leads to an Energized, Empowered and Effective Life- Thrive has nailed it’s third metric to success …and in essence it’s Self Care!
